Saying my Hail Merry’s!!

Okay, so we are all out there – but let’s just put this in writing… My name is Katie, and I am a chocoholic. Now, I have witnessed a miracle, a CHOCOLATE miracle. Today in the local organic grocer, a tasty little treat caught my eye… and when I looked closer that treat had “Vegan, Raw, Gluten-Free” written all over it! Now, usually this means “This is pretty tasty, but c’mon, it CAN’T be as good as that sugar laden stuff you get in the check out line.” No… it isn’t, because it is WAY better, this is the real deal. I don’t think I’ll ever eat chocolate in any other form than Raw again after eating Hail Merry’s Chocolate Miracle Tart. It was certainly the most decadent treat I have had that I didn’t have to make myself and was still made with ingredients from nature.

Eat Raw, Love Longer!

The Food Pyramid… Version 2.0?

The New Face of the Food Pyramid

Revealed June 2, 2011 in an article by the New York Times… the all new, and improved?, food pyramid has been redesigned as a campaign to fight obesity. While this new diagram can be read easily by even the most simple minded individual, it leaves many questions unanswered. As read in the New York Times article, “If the filled plate looks like the symbol, with lots of fruits and vegetables, she [Michelle Obama] said, ‘then we’re good, it’s as simple as that.’”  …Is it really? What about our sources of protein? Eggs? Nuts? Fats? And what is this cup of dairy implying on the top right corner? I guess you’re out of luck my lactose intolerant friends!

Eat your grains, kids!

Overall, ChooseMyPlate is a step in the right direction from its predecessors; which, are still convinced tomatoes are, in fact, a vegetable.

As quoted from the New York Times article, “‘Americans aren’t used to eating this way, so this is a big change,’ Dr. Nestle said.”  (Yes, I found the doctor’s name quite humorous here, too. Where’s the chocolate section?!).

While any progress is positive, here is some food for thought brought to you by Health-Bent:

“Kettlebell Swings With a Rock Are Not the Standard”

Want to help keep our Freedom Fighters fit, healthy, and happy? It’s the least we can do for our men and women in camouflage!

The 2011 Afghan Games is a badass, pro-Military, pro-CrossFit competition taking place on 9 and 10 July at Kandahar Airfield, CrossFit Boxes and garages around the World. In Afghanistan it will be a two day competition consisting of four WODs, to determine the fittest soldier.

But, there is a slight problem… Fitness equipment is scarce, and funds are short. Soldiers have become creative to stay fit and ready for battle.

Case in point:

Freedom-Loving-Firebreather

BUT…

1 Day, 1 WOD on the home front can help raise money for our War Fighters to stay fit while serving our country.

*Check out the Afghan Games and Register … it’s only $20.

All of the money (less operation and transaction fees) buys equipment for our Warfighters to use while serving in Afghanistan… Kettlebell swings with a rock are not the standard.

Plus: Other than playing an active roll in keeping our forces battle ready, you can score on great deals from promotional partners, discounts on future events, and promotions from CrossFit Affiliates.

Full Moon Brightest in 19 Years! Jai Shakti Devi!

Tonight’s full moon, March 19, 2011, is going to be the biggest and brightest in over nineteen years due to the elliptical orbit’s current alignment! This will make the moon appear 14% larger and brighter. This rare occurrence will be enjoyed by star-gazers, while the superstitious may want to take refuge under the covers tonight!

I’ll be sure to be outside taking pictures, if the Hawaiian rains move out tonight. :)

Cavemen Can Eat Pancakes, Too!

If you’ve been following a gluten-free, Paleolithic, or a diet without processed sugars I’m sure you’ve missed your Sunday morning pancakes! I know I love waking up late and enjoying my morning with some hot flap jacks. The only problem is, pancakes are full of gluten, processed flours, wheat and lots of other potential allergens like dairy as well. So here is a great way to enjoy using grains, à la Robb Wolf‘s delicious recipe.

You’ll need:

  • 2 Eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup nut butter (not peanut  butter- cashew/macadamia/almond nut butter works best… I like to mix it up!)
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • coconut oil to grease the skillet

Using a small mixing bowl, thoroughly mix all ingredients into a consistent batter- except the coconut oil.

Heat your skillet (I use a separate electric skillet) to about 325 degrees or low/medium heat, greasing it with coconut oil.

Pour a small amount of the batter onto the skillet to form a pancake (I like to make them a little smaller so they flip without any mess!). I like to add blueberries and pecans to the batter here, as well. Feel free to be creative and add your favorite pancake fillers! Flip after 1-2 minutes, or you begin to see bubbles rising through the flap jack.

Once you’ve cooked all your pancakes, you can serve them with any variety of toppings. Such as: Chopped apples and cinnamon; bananas and raw honey; heated blueberries; real maple syrup; and unsweetened apple sauce.

Enjoy!

Barefoot Revolution: Less is More

Finger Feet, Frog Feet, Foot Gloves have all become quirky nick names for those funky new shoes you may have seen around recently. These “shoes,” Vibram’s five-fingers, are designed with the latest technology in mind… You.

Instead of excess cushioning, support and shock absorbers added to your sneakers, athletic shoe designers are taking a new approach to how human beings are “born to run” (pardon the Bruce Springsteen reference).

Extra cushioned sneakers tend to exaggerate heel-striking, which is not only inefficient but creates a higher impact on your body. With a less cushioned sneaker you are forced to land lighter on the feet, striking mid-foot and directly beneath the body. Vibram’s also provide a chance to strengthen the entire foot and ankle, theoretically lessening the chance of injury with proper training.

So, you’re curious? Especially with this scandalous advertisement your attention is certainly drawn in (I do not suggest running in the nude… by the way). However, if you want to try these fun Foot Gloves on for size and you’ve been wearing your run of the mill sneaker, I would highly suggest allowing yourself a training period before you tackle any long run. I would also suggest transitioning through a “barefoot inspired” shoe like the Inov-8. These shoes have the same principles in mind, but look like a traditional shoe and provide more support.

As a yogini, I personally love my Vibram’s; but, I am the type who would much rather run free and barefoot than have to find matching socks and tie my shoes any day.

These shoes are so versatile they can be used for any number of activites, such as: CrossFit, weight training, yoga, paddle surfing, hiking, kayaking, swimming and more… Find the style that fits your activity!

If you would like more information, Outdoor Magazine has a great article on the Barefoot Revolution.

Kamadeva: The Flow of Love

February… The month where signs of Spring are beginning to emerge (if you are lucky) and celebrations of Love are abound. There is no better time than now to break out your yoga mat for some heart opening postures, and maybe even some creative and fun partner yoga!

A heart opening practice does not only physically involve creating space and flexibility in your upper back, shoulders and chest region, it also entails creating a spiritual space to allow love to creatively flow through your life and practice. You’ll find that heart opening asanas will allow you to reach both spiritual and physical goals on and off the mat. Don’t believe me? Think about the posture of a depressed person… Their head is drooping, shoulders slouched, chest concave, and eyes drift downward. Try to mimic this posture, and you’ll just feel down in the dumps! Instead, draw your shoulders away from the ears and down the back, lift your gaze and allow the collar bones to spread… Feel a sense of relief? It makes sense! Nobody goes to hug someone slouching and closed up, you spread your arms out wide and welcoming with a big heart. So practice some heart opening postures, here are some examples:

Bow Pose

Dhanurasana: Bow Pose

Bridge Pose

Setu Bhandasana: Bridge Pose

Upward Facing Dog

Urdhva Muhka Svanasana: Upward Facing Dog

Campel Pose

Ustrasana: Camel Pose

All backbending postures will open the heart, and should be practiced with a licensed yoga instructor or a partner if you want to take your practice home. Remember to honor your body’s internal wisdom by listening to any signals of discomfort and treat it with love.

Having Fun with Partner Yoga

“If the sun were not in love, he would have no brightness,
the side of the hill no grass on it.
The ocean would come to rest somewhere.”
