Finger Feet, Frog Feet, Foot Gloves have all become quirky nick names for those funky new shoes you may have seen around recently. These “shoes,” Vibram’s five-fingers, are designed with the latest technology in mind… You.
Instead of excess cushioning, support and shock absorbers added to your sneakers, athletic shoe designers are taking a new approach to how human beings are “born to run” (pardon the Bruce Springsteen reference).
Extra cushioned sneakers tend to exaggerate heel-striking, which is not only inefficient but creates a higher impact on your body. With a less cushioned sneaker you are forced to land lighter on the feet, striking mid-foot and directly beneath the body. Vibram’s also provide a chance to strengthen the entire foot and ankle, theoretically lessening the chance of injury with proper training.

So, you’re curious? Especially with this scandalous advertisement your attention is certainly drawn in (I do not suggest running in the nude… by the way). However, if you want to try these fun Foot Gloves on for size and you’ve been wearing your run of the mill sneaker, I would highly suggest allowing yourself a training period before you tackle any long run. I would also suggest transitioning through a “barefoot inspired” shoe like the Inov-8. These shoes have the same principles in mind, but look like a traditional shoe and provide more support.

As a yogini, I personally love my Vibram’s; but, I am the type who would much rather run free and barefoot than have to find matching socks and tie my shoes any day.
These shoes are so versatile they can be used for any number of activites, such as: CrossFit, weight training, yoga, paddle surfing, hiking, kayaking, swimming and more… Find the style that fits your activity!
If you would like more information, Outdoor Magazine has a great article on the Barefoot Revolution.
